Where Are The BlueSky Apps‽ Rival Protocols Have Them!

I am wondering where the BlueSky apps are‽

I think it is crazy that after being founded in 2019 by Jack Dorsey that we still have yet to see any apps built upon that protocol.

Dorsey first announced the Bluesky initiative in 2019 on Twitter. The company’s Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal invited initial working group members in early 2020. (...)

On April 15, 2022, Jack Dorsey acknowledged that the initial progress on the project from the first developers was off to a slow start. (Vanguard)

Compare & contrast to the Lens Protocol who launched in February of 2022 & already boasts hundreds of apps!

Aave the decentralized finance lending platform, launched the Lens Protocol ecosystem on the Polygon blockchain as their way to challenge centralized social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook. What started with an open letter to garner support around the idea that content creators should own and control their digital identities, led to developing a Web3-native social network powered by nonfungible tokens (NFTs). There is also the Orbis Web3 Protocol (note: not to be confused with the other Orbis Protocol), who probably has the slickest website out of everyone has over a dozen apps & was started in December of 2021.

Orbis’ journey started on Ceramic’s Clay Testnet in December last year. In a few months, Orbis generated more than 70k Ceramic streams and over 20k unique posts. Today, Orbis is launching on Ceramic Mainnet with an improved user experience and opening its SDK to external developers to let anyone build fully decentralized social apps or social features on top of the Orbis architecture. Last but not least is my favorite, ActivityPub whose first public working draft was in January of 2016. Note: you can visit an updated version from the W3C website here.

Unfortunately ActivityPub’s website is awful on the eyes, but fortunately Fediverse Party is much easier on the eyes, & they list dozens & dozens of apps (Yet Another Note: How many apps are on the Fediverse‽ Hundreds‽).

So my question for BlueSky is this: What is taking so long‽ They should already be far ahead of rivals as they seem to be better funded & have a greater access to the media. What is holding them back‽

Update (26/11/2022): There is also Scuttlebutt which was started in 2016 & also has apps (albeit not that many).

Scuttlebutt was started in May 2014 by Dominic Tarr (dominictarr) as an alternative offline-first invite-only social network that allows users to gain total control of their data and privacy. Secure Scuttlebutt (ssb) was released shortly after which puts privacy at the forefront with more encryption features. (Miguel Mota on Medium)

Hopefully BlueSky will release an app soon, lest the protocol-verse (not sure what I should call it) moves on over lack of interest. Note: Thanks for the heads up about Scuttlebutt @pastelscute@mastodon.social!
