Props to @atomicpoet@mastodon.social for breaking this news on Mastodon, as it seems Mask.io has not only purchased the second largest Mastodon server, but has been quietly managing two other Mastodon servers as well.

The Social Coop Limited (Social Coop), the entity affiliated with Mask Network has acquired Pawoo.net, one of the largest Mastodon instances. The new team will be taking over the operation and maintenance of Pawoo.net starting from December 21st, 2022, with no impact on existing users. [...]

Mask team has been the maintainer of two of the most active instances of Mastodon, mstdn.jp, and mastodon.cloud, and built the first official app for Mastodon collaborated with Mastodon core builder team and NYC-based design firm Lickability. (Mask Network)

With the latest acquisition of Pawoo.net, Mask now owns three out four of the largest Mastodon sites worldwide, & seems intent on dominating the Fediverse (at least in Japan).

Currently both Mastodon.cloud & Mstdn.jp are run by admins from Sujitech, who has offices in the United States & Japan.

Mask appears to be based out of Singapore (props to @binarytango@mstdn.binarytango.com for finding this info) & is a โ€œWeb 3.0โ€ cryptocurrency company according to TechCrunch.

I wonder if Mask will expand their empire towards other platforms like Pixelfedโ€ฝ I would not be surprised if the owners of Pixelfed.Tokyo & Pixelfed.de started receiving offers soon.

Update: Here is a summary of the Zoom call I had with Pawoo.net new owner

Nicknamed Space Karen & Elmo by his digital foes, Elon Musk has turned a doxing incident that endangered his son into an excuse to temporarily suspending reporters across the Twitterverse.

Elon musk has also banned numerous Fediverse sites (Mastodon, Pixelfed, WriteFreely, etcetera) upon posting domain links on Twitter.

This has sparked public outrage, with the European Union threatening sanctions against the blue bird site.

Jourova didnโ€™t add any further details on the sanctions. Under the EUโ€™s Digital Services Act, companies can be fined up to 6% of their global annual revenues for breaches.

The DSA, which entered into force on Nov. 16, requires large platforms to reduce harms online, implement protections for usersโ€™ rights and issue transparency reports. (CNBC)

If the European Union enacted sanctions against Twitter, Elon Musk would retaliate by firing all of the European Union staff, & (since he can alter the rules at will) suspend all of the governmental accounts of the European Union on Twitter (including national governmental accounts of member states).

After all, if Elon Musk is willing to risk lawsuits by not paying venders & ignoring requests from landlords worldwide for rent money, then ignoring paying fines from a governmental power an ocean away should be considered a given (note: Elon Musk might brazenly challenge the Federal Trace Commission in the United States).

So, what exactly can the European Union do against a man who is willing to brazen the coming storm against him in 2023โ€ฝ Simple, attack Elon Muskโ€™s biggest weakness, which can be summed up in one song.

Currently Elon Musk is [in a financial crunch]() & he is desperately trying to find ways to keep the cash flowing to his latest eye candy (also known as Twitter).

Instead of @EC_Sanctions@social.network.europa.eu issuing general sanctions (which would result in @ELA@social.network.europa.eu scrambling to address grievances from ex-Twitter employees from Europe), they should instead:

  • Demand Apple & Google remove Twitter from the App Store & Google Play, respectively.
  • Pressure Twitter advertisers with businesses in Europe to cease advertising or face regulatory scrutiny in the region
  • Highlight problematic accounts (Naziโ€™s, bigots, racists, etcetera) actively using Twitter to the media & encourage the pubic to adopt alternatives like Mastodon, Pixelfed & WriteFreely.

These three initiatives would result in Twitter being crippled, forcing Elon Musk to take the @EU_Commission@social.network.europa.eu seriously.

Would these moves by the European government workโ€ฝ Only time would tell.

But even if it did not persuade Elon Musk to change his mind, it might force the banks who loaned Musk billions to call in their debts, resulting in new leadership.

As Lou Paskalis sums it up best:

I previously typed up a list of companies people could setup their own Fediverse instance using:

  • Mastodon
  • Pixelfed
  • Peertube
  • Pleroma
  • Matrix (not officially apart of the Fediverse, but used by many within it)
  • WriteFreely
  • Nextcloud
  • Jitsi Meet (also not officially apart of the Fediverse)
  • Funkwhale
  • BookWyrm

However, many companies have closed registrations, some that have closed have reopened, others are not recommended (due to customer support or exorbitant pricing) & others have regional restrictions for clients (just the European Union).

I am also featuring companies who highlight instances they support, along with affordable prices & (if available) server locations.

So here is an updated (& recommended) list. I am also posting the video I created last time here as well.

So @Raspberry_Pi@raspberrypi.social decided to introduce @TobyRobertsPi@mastodon.social to the world as their latest & greatest hire.

โ€œI used to be a police officer tackling serious organised crime and terror threats across the east of the UK,โ€ Toby tells us. โ€œI was a Technical Surveillance Officer for 15 years, so I built stuff to hide video, audio, and other covert gear. You really donโ€™t want your sensitive police equipment discovered, so Iโ€™d disguise it as something else, like a piece of street furniture or a household item. The variety of tools and equipment I used then really shaped what I do today.โ€ (Raspberry Pi News)

Overall itโ€™s a normal post about a new employee & where they were employed in the past.

However, many people on Mastodon & Twitter are upset about Toby Roberts working for Raspberry Pi due to his past, & publicaly voiced their displeasure.

Vitriol between the company & customers were quickly exchanged, resulting in blocks from both sides.

My Thoughts

Summary of my video thoughts:

  • As an African I always assume cops are spying on me due to racial profiling (at least in America), but Toby Roberts past should not disqualify him from his present job (this is coming from someone who actually has been harassed by cops & security before)
  • I understand Raspberry Pi wanting to defend their own against attacks, but they should have handled this the way Toby Roberts did (graciously addressing concerns), instead of railing against angry customers
  • No, I will not be blocking Raspberry Pi for displaying awful customer service as I have experienced this from even Apple & Amazon (Raspberry Pi needs to retrain or replace whoever tweeted/tooted/posted responses to angry customers)

Those are my brief thoughts on the matter, but if you disagree or think I need some enlightenment on the matter, feel free to tweet/toot/message me on Mastodon (you can also tweet me but spammers are messaging me daily now...sigh).

With the Fediverse surpassing 8 million accounts (at least on Mastodon), many server admins are burning through cash in order to provide enough resources to keep their sites online.

Some server bills are exceeding $2,000 per month, which is why some are adopting premium & freemium methods to help cover their bandwidth & hosting fees.

Although donating to your local admin is ideal, some people are unable to contribute financially due to circumstances in life (i.e. inflation costs, food costs, utilities, debt, etcetera) that take precedence over digital donations.

In lieu of contributing cash, here are several ways Fediverse folks can freely bless their server admins.

Greeting Newbies

Many peopleโ€™s first time entrance upon a Fediverse instance can be lonely, especially if they are fleeing a much larger service like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, etcetera.

Greeting newcomers might appear trite, but that first interaction could determine whether someone becomes a life long member of the Fediverse.

If you have the time, greet newcomers who enter an instance by:

  • Following them & recommending people they should follow
  • Offer advice about the Fediverse rules & culture (assume they do no know)
  • Make sure their interaction upon the instance is a positive one
  • If they have issues, either try to resolve it or find someone who can

Greeting is simple & helps foster a welcoming environment & helps dispel any notions of the Fediverse being a hostile space.

Watcher Of Evil

Unfortunately, along with newbies joining the Fediverse, there are nefarious actors who simply enjoy harassing others online for wicked reasons.

Instance admins can not be everywhere & online all the time, which is where Watchers come in to help alleviate the burden of keeping an instance troll free.

A Watcherโ€™s job is very simple as they are required to:

  • Confront individuals purposely violating the server rules
  • Report individuals to moderators who threaten the culture & safety of the community
  • Constantly watch for Spam accounts, & flag them for removal

Watchers could be assigned an official role upon a server, & enough of them could help make a moderator & adminโ€™s life easier when it comes to weeding out wicked individuals.

Example: Counter Social has very few moderators (I assume just one), but thousands upon thousands of unofficial watchers. The community itself does an excellent job of weeding out spammers, trolls, & hostile actors which makes moderation much easier for the moderator(s).

Moderator Against Monsters

Moderating a server is more or less a thankless job that does not come with many benefits (& can often lead towards burn out).

However, if one has the time, mental fortitude & proper judgement of character, moderating for free is a great way to bless your local admin saving them time & money (especially in the legal arena).

The number of moderators upon any instance is up to the local admin, however there should be enough moderators to properly manage a site (whether itโ€™s one or over 1,000 moderators).

Contrary to popular myth, large instances can be effectively moderated, but that depends upon how many Watchers are actively engaged in the community & how fast a Moderator can respond to issues that appear.

Bonus: Outsource Media Content

If none of the roles appeal to a person, they can also do something very simple to help reduce admin server costs by using third party services to do โ€œthe heavy lifting.โ€

Instead of uploading audio, video, high resolution images, documents, etcetera, directly upon a server, a person could simply upload media file types using these alternatives.

Uploading elsewhere might appear trivial, but it can help reduce the operating cost for an admin, which means they can commit more resources elsewhere or even use the extra funds to pay their moderators a small stipend.

Any Other Suggestions

If you have reached the end of this lengthy post & believe the options offered are incomplete (note: they probably are), feel free to message me on Mastodon or Matrix with suggested additions or links (which will be added below).

Interesting topic about Mastodon Security on Ars Technica

Of course, all platforms have these sorts of vulnerabilities, and Mastodon developers and instance admins have been quick to patch them once reported. But other platforms have teams of security engineers, researchers, and compliance specialists who pore over recently patched vulnerabilities to ensure their platform runs up-to-date components. Mastodonโ€™s federated structure canโ€™t replicate this. Expecting volunteers to perform at the same scale as a centralized platform is unrealistic, to say the least.

True, a dedicated security team at a large tech company would theoretically provide better security than a single instance administrator, but (from what I have seen) many admins are thoroughly knowledgeable in tech security & some even specialize in the tech security arena.

Have Mastodon instances been attacked beforeโ€ฝ Yes. Counter Social (a Mastodon-based instance) is a semi-frequent target of hacks. However the instance admin @th3j35t3r@counter.social (also @th3j35t3r@twitter.com) has done a phenomenal at keeping the site up.

Fortunately we have not seen wide spread attacks against Mastodon servers which is probably due to several reasons:

  • The Fediverse has yet to cross the threshold of 50 million confirmed active users (they might have crossed this already as many Chinese citizens use Mastodon)
  • Mastodon is only one part of the Fediverse, & even if one instance software could be taken down, people would still be able to sign up & create accounts on other platforms
  • There is little financial incentive in taking over an instance, due to the lack of personal information available (as Ars Technica explains)

Storing less personal information makes Mastodon a lower-value target and means that even if an instance gets hacked, thereโ€™s less data for a hacker to take. Another thing that is likely to make Mastodon a less likely target is its decentralization. A site like Twitter or Facebook gives hackers the opportunity to steal data for hundreds of millions of people with a single hack. Mastodon's instances have orders of magnitude fewer users.

As more people discover & join the Fediverse, it will be interesting to see how the community adjusts to new security threats that will emerge. Although truth be told I personally believe most future attacks will not come from random hackers seeking to generative a quick fortune, but from governmental authorities attempting to stifle information from citizens.

I posted some screen shots on my Tumblr, but it seems like Elon Musk is upset that Apple is threatening Twitterโ€™s presence in the App Store.

This is not an idle threat, as Apple previously removed Tumblr from the App Store over content moderation issues.

Tumblr says that child pornography was the reason for its appโ€™s sudden disappearance from the iOS App Store. The app has been missing from the store since November 16th, but until now the reason for its absence was unclear โ€” initially Tumblr simply said it was โ€œworking to resolve the issue with the iOS app.โ€ However, after Download.com approached Tumblr with sources claiming that the reason was related to the discovery of child pornography on the service, the Yahoo-owned social media network issued a new statement confirming the matter. (The Verge)

Apple also removed the infamous Parler app before too.

Apple removed Parler, an app popular with Trump supporters, from its iPhone App Store on Saturday.

Apple said that posts on the pro-Trump social network related to the U.S. Capitol riot last week included calls for violence, which violates Appleโ€™s rules against objectionable content. (CNBC)

If Elon Musk thinks Twitter is too big to be removed from the App Store, then I think he will be in for a big surprise (sooner rather than later).

FediBlocks

  • Should be used as a last resort to block sites over run by dangerous hate groups (Naziโ€™s, KKK, religious extremists promoting violence, etcetera).
  • If an instance is having problems moderating due to itโ€™s size (but is not encouraging hate conduct & has rules against it) they should be limited
  • Blocking as a first resort will result in a fragmented Fediverse, allowing a centralized power (like Tumblr.com) to โ€œsettle the rulesโ€ (a remedy for this is the AIA, explained later on)
  • Blocking first also encourages users to abandon Fediverse instances for de-federated platforms (like Counter Social) or host solo instances to avoid becoming collateral damage

Dealing with Qotoโ€™s missteps

  • Yes, @freemo@qoto.org should have blocked the NAZI site
  • Claiming Eugen is siding with Naziโ€™s is disingenuous (Eugen defending brand)
  • Semi-Wrong: Subscription feed should have been created on separate server & limited to only following Kiwifarms & other bad actors (verified by other admins)
  • Should not have used KiwiFarm list to find out who blocked him, should have searched instances on his own
  • Gathering media attention was an awful decision

What Qoto did right

  • Trying to contact other admins of other instances
  • Semi-right: Subscription feed to follow dangerous haters was ingenious, however it SHOULD NOT have been done on main server & should have been limited to bad actors only

Proposed Solution: Admin Instance Assembly (AIA)

  • For Instance Admins only (or a moderator I can attend if Admin can not)
  • Would be a way for Admins to contact each other. Can be based upon Mastodon or Matrix (I suggest both)
  • Admins qualify if they meet a time & user limit (say 3 months old & over 100 active users)

I am wondering where the BlueSky apps areโ€ฝ

I think it is crazy that after being founded in 2019 by Jack Dorsey that we still have yet to see any apps built upon that protocol.

Dorsey first announced the Bluesky initiative in 2019 on Twitter. The companyโ€™s Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal invited initial working group members in early 2020. (...)

On April 15, 2022, Jack Dorsey acknowledged that the initial progress on the project from the first developers was off to a slow start. (Vanguard)

Compare & contrast to the Lens Protocol who launched in February of 2022 & already boasts hundreds of apps!

Aave the decentralized finance lending platform, launched the Lens Protocol ecosystem on the Polygon blockchain as their way to challenge centralized social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook. What started with an open letter to garner support around the idea that content creators should own and control their digital identities, led to developing a Web3-native social network powered by nonfungible tokens (NFTs). (Coin Telegraph)

There is also the Orbis Web3 Protocol (note: not to be confused with the other Orbis Protocol), who probably has the slickest website out of everyone has over a dozen apps & was started in December of 2021.

Orbisโ€™ journey started on Ceramicโ€™s Clay Testnet in December last year. In a few months, Orbis generated more than 70k Ceramic streams and over 20k unique posts. Today, Orbis is launching on Ceramic Mainnet with an improved user experience and opening its SDK to external developers to let anyone build fully decentralized social apps or social features on top of the Orbis architecture. (Ceramic Network Blog)

Last but not least is my favorite, ActivityPub whose first public working draft was in January of 2016. Note: you can visit an updated version from the W3C website here.

Unfortunately ActivityPubโ€™s website is awful on the eyes, but fortunately Fediverse Party is much easier on the eyes, & they list dozens & dozens of apps (Yet Another Note: How many apps are on the Fediverseโ€ฝ Hundredsโ€ฝ).

So my question for BlueSky is this: What is taking so longโ€ฝ They should already be far ahead of rivals as they seem to be better funded & have a greater access to the media. What is holding them backโ€ฝ

Update (26/11/2022): There is also Scuttlebutt which was started in 2016 & also has apps (albeit not that many).

Scuttlebutt was started in May 2014 by Dominic Tarr (dominictarr) as an alternative offline-first invite-only social network that allows users to gain total control of their data and privacy. Secure Scuttlebutt (ssb) was released shortly after which puts privacy at the forefront with more encryption features. (Miguel Mota on Medium)

Hopefully BlueSky will release an app soon, lest the protocol-verse (not sure what I should call it) moves on over lack of interest. Note: Thanks for the heads up about Scuttlebutt @pastelscute@mastodon.social!
