I am reminiscing how wonderful 2023 will be for the world of social networking & blogs, thanks to ActivityPub.

  • Threads has already stated their intentions of joining the Fediverse sooner rather than later, although no specific date has been given yet.

  • After many months of silence, the CEO of Tumblr himself has reconfirmed they will also be joining the Fediverse, but not as soon as Threads though due to lack of resources & personnel.

  • The co-founder & Chief Operating Officer of Post (also known as Post News) has also confirmed that Post will be joining the Fediverse in 2023 as well.

I believe Threads entrance will inspire more social networks to adopt the Fediverse, while the entry of Tumblr & Post will probably motivate numerous other blog platforms to enter.

I want you for Misskey development

Image Credit: Misskey Mascot @ai@misskey.io (an interesting bot account), via Misskey

The main Misskey server at Misskey.io is experiencing yet another round of growing pains, as the Misskey creator @syuilo@misskey.io revealed.

(via Google Translate) Misskey.io is increasing at a pace of 20,000 people a day (from Syuilo)

This is awesome! Currently Misskey is the second most popular platform in the Fediverse (after Mastodon).

Unfortunately it appears that main Misskey server in Japan is following Threads lead & will begin to heavily discourage residents of the European Union from signing up on their servers in due to the pending General Data Protection Regulation laws (GDPR).

The reason we don't accept usage under the GDPR is because we've had users who demanded that we delete everything, including backups and data from other instances. That's just unreasonable, and apparently, GDPR doesn't allow for the costs of handling such requests to be charged. If you don't make any deletion requests or assert any rights under the GDPR, there's no problem with using our service from the EU or the UK. (Although, officially, it's prohibited.) (...)

We checked with a lawyer, but there aren't many in Japan who know GDPR inside out, and we didn't get a clear answer from government agencies either. So, to prevent similar issues in the future, we added GDPR restrictions. But anyway, it's totally irrelevant to the general public. (via @AureoleArk@misskey.io responding on Misskey.io)

GDPR will be a thorny issue with many social networking sites, especially if they allow ads to be displayed upon their site.

For what it is worth, Misskey.io does display unobtrusive ads on their site to help pay the server bill, although they are also seeking donations on PayPal & Paetreon to help keep the lights on (I am currently donating $10 per month to Misskey).

Note: My personal objections to GDPR are mainly cosmetic as (according to legal minds I conversed with) my solo instances require a script blocking pop up asking for user consent before any scripts load on the website (I utterly loathe popups!!!!).

Although Misskey will probably enjoy rapid growth outside of the European Union, their lack of EU embrace could help propel future growth for Firefish (previously known as Calckey), which is a Misskey fork created by @kainoa@firefish.social (their flagship server is Firefish).

When Instagram launched Threads, to the surprise of many the new social network by Meta surpassed 100 million users in less than a week.

Another pleasant surprise was the fact that Instagram did not seize the user handle @threads@instagram.com, which would allow them to obtain @threads@threads.net as an official account.

Instagram screenshot of @threads account

Instead they simply created @threadsapp@instagram.com & @threadsapp@threads.net, respectively, & allowed the current owner of the Threads handle (which is a womanโ€™s fashion retail store) to keep the current handle on both social networks.

Threads screenshot of @threads account

Compare & contrast that with how Twitter simply seized the @x@twitter.com handle without warning from the previous owner.

The owner of the @x Twitter handle confirmed that the company, now known as X, took over his account without warning or financial compensation, telling him the handle is a property of X. The handle had previously belonged to Gene X Hwang of the corporate photography and videography studio Orange Photography. In a letter, the company formerly known as Twitter thanked Hwang for his loyalty and offered him a selection of X merchandise and a tour of Xโ€™s HQ, as a โ€œreflection of our appreciation.โ€ (Via TechCrunch)

While @elonmusk@twitter.com is legally entitled to obtain the user handle without compensation (as he owns X, formally Twitter), his lack of consideration reveals how little he regards the users on his platform.

Itโ€™s akin to a landlord seizing a furnished television, only to compensate the tenants later on by giving them a radio.

It is still to early to tell whether Threads will surpass X (formally known as Twitter), but I would not be surprised if Threads replaces Twitter as the โ€œpulse of the planetโ€ (at least among the elites) in the not so distant future.

The defederated Mastodon variant Truth Social is still fairly active, despite living in Twitterโ€™s shadow, as well as Threads.

While the worldโ€™s top social apps have weekly active user counts starting in the half-billion range years into their lifecycles, Threads attracting nearly 100 million WAU during this early period is unprecedented. That means it already had about a fifth of the weekly active user base of Twitter worldwide and was 86 times the WAU of the largest Twitter rival in the United States by that measure, Truth Social, with 1 million WAU as of last week. (Data.ai Blog)

If Truth Social activated ActivityPub upon their defederated instance, they would sadly sit at the top of the Fediverse (at least until Threads enters the arena).

Despite its massive size, Truth Social has yet to turn a profit as the site has only generated approximately one million dollars in revenue, far short of what their server bill by RightForge was last year (which was over one & a half million dollars in 2022).

I was under the impression that Threads by Instagram would embrace ActivityPub many months from now (either in October of 2023 or early 2024).

However Threads seems to indicate that they are working on making Metaโ€™s newest social network compatible with the Fediverse.

ICYMI: Weโ€™re working toward making Threads compatible with ActivityPub, which means it would work with apps like Mastodon and WordPress. Think of it like email: You can write to anyone with an email address, because itโ€™s a decentralized system. (Official Threads Account)

Threads links to an Instagram page in their thread (pun not intended) which elaborates on their next plans for the site.

Whatโ€™s Next? Reach New Audiences

Many parts of Threads will feel familiar to anyone who loves Instagram: we want to create a positive, creative, vibrant place for sharing what matters, this time anchored in the written word. Starting soon, other parts of this app will feel very new. Our plan is to build Threads on the ActivityPub protocol โ€“ a set of decentralized standards for social networking. Soon, we will make Threads interoperable with other apps that also support the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress. Other services including Tumblr have shared plans to support the ActivityPub protocol in the future. (Instagram Creators)

Threads has constantly talked about Mastodon to the media, but now they are also talking about creators using Threads to follow blogs on WordPress & (in the future) Tumblr as well.

With traffic to Threads allegedly dying down, embracing ActivityPub sooner would be a smart way to keep their site relevant in the news, as well as encourage famous folks, brands, organizations, government institutions, etcetera, to connect their WordPress blogs to Metaโ€™s microblogging site.

Threads also might also desire a major feature that distinguishes themselves from their arc nemesis, Twitter.

This seems rather odd when you consider the fact that Threads boasts over 110 million users now.

Even though Truth Social is the largest Fediverse instance by account size (at least until Threads arrives with over 110 million users), the defederated Mastodon variant only made a million dollars since itโ€™s debut in February.

The new report says Trump Media & Technology Group, which runs the social network Truth Social, reported receiving about $1.2 million in advertising, a paltry sum compared with the ad revenue of Twitter and other social media rivals Trump has long said it would supplant. (Washingtonpost, discovered via The Messenger)

This revenue figure would seem impressive if it were not for the fact that the former President of the United States routinely posts upon Truth Social.

Truth Social would expectingly have higher revenues than this, at least (from my expectation) around $100 million given Donald Trumpโ€™s popularity amongst the GOP faithful. I wonder if the reason for lackluster results could be Truth Socialโ€™s lack of appeal from advertisersโ€ฝ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Threads.net logo (a Meta product)

After months of speculation, Instagram has finally released Threads to the world (well, everywhere except nations within the European Union).

With Threads on track to surpass a 100 million users, some may wonder why Meta even bothers embracing the Fediverse when Threads will ultimately dominate the decentralized social network as soon as they enter the arena.

Meta might be many things (some good, some bad), but ultimately they are a business, & like all businesses, they will not waste financial resources if they do not see a future profit in an endeavor. So here are four business reasons why Meta is embracing the Fediverse.

Verification Is Currency

Remember Meta Verificationโ€ฝ There is a demand for a real world verification system on digital platforms nowadays, & before Elon Musk screwed that up the manual blue checkmark system was almost perfect.

Millions (if not billions) of people who are not celebrities desire to be verified online, & Meta realized that by offering real world verification to the masses (along with some extra security to justify the price), they could generate billions of dollars on a โ€œside business.โ€

By establishing itself as the gold standard for online verification, Meta can use Threads to provide online verification to Fediverse accounts, which the non-geek masses will use as method to identify legit businesses & individuals across the Fediverse.

Note: It would not be surprising if Meta verification is legally certified as legit in front of the courts in the not so distant future.

To Buy Or Not To Buy Is The Question

After Instagram uses Threads to establish itself as the de facto dignitary of digital verification to the masses, we will probably begin to see Meta encourage creators to open shops in order to sell physical goods.

Meta already allows creators to sell goods, on Instagram, but if Meta can convince hundreds of millions (if not billions) to trust creators who are Meta verified over non-Meta verified accounts, they can effectively influence multiple markets like Amazon without having to deal with the overhead of hosting goods & products.

With online fraud on the rise, people will demand safe spaces to spend their hard earned currency, & it would not be surprising if Meta tries to establish itself as a trusted payment processor in the near future.

Expanding The Fediverse, Expand Your Clientele

Fediverse Logo

The Fediverse in its current state is far too small for Facebook to make a decent profit off of the community. Threads alone will dwarf the Fediverse in the same way Jupiter dwarfs the planets in our solar system.

But by Threads embracing ActivityPub, they will encourage hundreds of millions (if not billions) to also enter the Fediverse using thousands (or tens of thousands) of various platforms.

It would also not be surprising to see Threads offer managed premium hosting options (basically โ€œThreads under your own domainโ€) to clients in the future, as well as offer the proprietary software to numerous hosting companies for a small fee.

Update: corrected spelling in header. Thanks for letting me know about this @Homebrewandhacking@mastodon.ie!

What About Advertisingโ€ฝ

Meta is an ad company, & they will probably integrate advertising within Threads. However, if they implemented it within the news feed like they do with Instagram & Facebook, there would be immediate backlash.

Meta will get around this by partnering with Fediverse users themselves to allow the ads to be either automatically promoted (perhaps via API access) or manually promoted from established accounts. Some Verified celebrities & individuals will create promotional posts advertising products or services within their feed to their followers.

Meta will probably expand this offer to creators on other platforms, with the only requirements being they have to be apart of the Meta verified program (even if they do not use Threads themselves).

Conclusion

There are also numerous of benefits of Threads embracing the Fediverse, including:

  • Regulatory: harder to accuse Meta of being a monopoly
  • Legal: as @atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org mentioned, Meta can gain access to news content without paying for it
  • Meta can communicate with potential clients behind national bans from hostile nations (many of them use VPNs).

Currently Meta reaches billions of people using their centralized social networks. But in order to reach the rest of humanity, Meta needs a proven, trustworthy & reliable tool that they do not control (for obvious reasons), hence the reason why they probably chose ActivityPub over other contenders.

๐Ÿฅท๐Ÿพ Other Hideaways: ๐Ÿงต Darnell (Threads) ๐Ÿ”ž Darnell (Hard News) ๐Ÿฌ Darnell (Flipboard)

I have witnessed vigorous debate within the Fediverse about how to engage with Metaโ€™s pending arrival into our sacred digital spaces.

Some have argued that servers within the Fediverse should pledge to preemptively block Instagramโ€™s proxy, who is a very clear present danger to the Fediverse overall.

The timing of the news and my original thread was quite serendipitous, as it allowed me to recall that Facebook played a role in killing of RSS, through strategies better known from Microsoftโ€™s fight against open protocols and FLOSS: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish (EEE). Luckily, the memory is still fresh enough for some of us to realize that Metaโ€™s actions represent a threat for the Fedivers. [sic]

The obvious recommendation here is to defederate with extreme prejudice any and all Facebook-associated instance. We know how it will play out, weโ€™ve seen it happen again and again. It doesnโ€™t matter how nice and cooperative they will be in the beginning, this is a power move against the Fediverse, a move against which it has no chance of resisting if even an inch is given.

Via @oblomov@sociale.network on Oblomov.eu

@vantablack@beach.city has already compiled a list called FediPact which displays instances that have already pledged to unceremoniously block Instagramโ€™s Proxy as soon as it enters the Fediverse (note: this list can also be viewed upon FediDB).

The urge to block Meta is understandable as Zuckerberg has a history of using his clout in an attempt to destroy rivals. However, blocking at this point in time is pointless as Facebook can (if they are not already doing this currently) catalog your content via RSS feeds (this feat was easily demonstrated previously by @freemo@qoto.org geek eons ago).

Meta can also use hidden methods to crawl sites or receive pings whenever you create content on your account. So hiding away in a corner somewhere, waiting for the Zuckerverse to take over is a bad defensive option at best. Instead of hiding away from the beast, why not lure it out & entrap it insteadโ€ฝ

Note: Content warning (lots of cussing) for the video below.

The Best Defense Is A Good Offense (Operation Neo)

If you have loved ones (friends, family neighbors, etcetera) who are on social networks, you should encourage them to join Instagramโ€™s Thread when it launches, but only if prior attempts of convincing them to join the greater Fediverse have failed.

No, I am not embracing the Zuck. However, the best way to display the superiority of the greater Fediverse is to have our loved ones actively appear on the Fediverse, & using Instagramโ€™s ActivityPub powered proxy as a stepping stone will be key.

To quote Neo from The Matrix:

Once your friend, neighbor, loved one, relative, best frenemy, etcetera, are on Instagramโ€™s Proxy (which I will refer to at Threads from now on), follow & interact with them from your Fediverse proper accounts on Misskey, Mastodon, Pixelfed, WriteFreely, WordPress, etcetera.

The purpose is to expose them to the greater Fediverse, & show them โ€œa world without boundaries,โ€ with the ultimate goal of them leaving the Zuckerverse in favor of the greater Fediverse.

If you are successful with friends, family, frenemies, etcetera, then repeat this with:

  • businesses in your local community (who will look favorably on the idea of controlling their own social account)
  • local not-for-profits in your area (both secular & religious)
  • local politicians (mayors, legislators, congressional representatives, senators, governors, etcetera)

If enough people experience the greater Fediverse (say 10% when compared to Threads population), Meta will be entrapped to maintain good relations with ActivityPub enabled services, lest they risk a backlash from numerous localities, businesses (whose money Meta desires) & political leaders (the latter who enjoy using Meta as a punching bag).

Conclusion: We Are The Fediverse, & We Are Not Afraid

I will be honest here, the odds of the greater Fediverse succeeding against the Zuckerverse is slim. Of the top 30 Fediverse instances in the Fediverse right now, I would honestly say only one instance is defensively prepared against Meta, & that honor goes to Counter Social by @th3j35t3r@counter.social (I am @darnell@counter.social over there for what it is worth).

However, engaging the masses upon an ActivityPub enabled platform is a better strategy than hiding away & blocking Threads. Doing the latter would cede the future of decentralizing away from the masses & into the hands of a few, a mistake we already made with email, phone OS software, desktop computing & potentially Virtual Reality.

We should not fear Zackโ€™s entrance into the Fediverse, but we also should not allow Threads debut into the Fediverse to go unchallenged. Regardless of our political perspectives, platform preferences & social backgrounds, we should unite in an effort to enlighten the masses about the greater Fediverse.

After all, if we do not tell the people about the real Fediverse, then who willโ€ฝ

I missed this article last month, but apparently @Jnbarrot@twitter.com has threatened to to use @eucommission@social.network.europa.eu to ban Twitter throughout the [European Union](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EuropeanUnion) if @elonmusk@twitter.com does not reign in the misinformation that allegedly rages unchecked upon the social network.

In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August.

โ€œDisinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies,โ€ said Barrot. โ€œTwitter, if it repeatedly doesn't follow our rules, will be banned from the EU,โ€ the French minister added. (Politico)

I personally think iElon Musk will ignore the European Union, & here is what I think what will happen.

Note: This is just pure speculation on my part.

InstaGeddon In June

European Union continues to threaten Twitter. Meanwhile Instagram launches their Twitter killer (called Threads), taking away a significant number of users initially (resulting in Twitterโ€™s temporary decline).

Elon Musk whines he is being threatened with censorship in Europe. Meanwhile, in order to comply with European laws, Instagram, Youtube, Facebook, etcetera, begin hiding offending posts & videos or banning accounts directly. This disproportionately affects conservatives throughout Europe.

Meanwhile Elon Musk threatens to shut down offices in Europe, fire the remaining employees & forgo paying severance packages. This prompts European courts to get involved.

July Surprise: Twitterverse Embraces The Fediverseโ€ฝ

After jealously watching Threads surpass Twitterโ€™s active numbers, Elon Musk announces that Twitter will embrace ActivityPub, albeit only for premium members. This pay-to-Fedi-play move is controversial, although it is mimicked by Reddit & potentially LinkedIn.

Millions of Twitter users sign up for Twitter Blue in order to harass individuals on Threads in the future with insane conspiracy theories. Since Elon Musk lacks to employees to properly implement ActivityPub within Twitter, the blue bird never joins the Fediverse & the Musketeer pockets the extra cash.

Meanwhile, Thread users beg Instagram to block Twitterโ€™s domain to avoid being harassed online in the future. Instagram declines a blanket ban (to avoid a potential cyber war), but empowers users to block domains from within their account. Numerous accounts across Threads & the Fediverse preemptively block the blue bird.

August Showdown: Elon Verses The Woke Mind Virusโ€ฝ

Elon Musk accuses the European Union, Facebook & the Woke Mind Virus of censoring Twitter, rallies conservatives around the world to join the blue bird as the last, large free speech platform online. Tens of millions join, & the site becomes super toxic.

The European Union announces specific fines they will levy against Twitter, & Elon Musk announces the fines will force home to layoff all his European Twitter employees & forgo paying severance packages. Twitter refuses to pay the fines so European courts sanctions Twitter. However, only half of the countries enforce the ban while the other half (led by Italy, Hungary & Poland) object to the sanctions, bans, etcetera & declare they will not abide by it.

Elon Musk ends up fighting the European Union in various courts throughout the rest of 20223, all the while hoping Joe Biden loses the Presidential election in 2024.

Conclusion

Twitter will probably face piecemeal bans & sanctions in some countries in Europe, while being able to freely operate in in conservative nations in Europe by receiving protection from various heads of state.
